WHAT IS THE VEGAN KETO DIET?
The ketogenic diet is low in carbohydrates, high in fat, and moderate in protein.
Carbohydrates are typically reduced to less than 20-30 grams per day in order to achieve and maintain the state of ketosis – a metabolic process in which the body burns fat instead of glucose for fuel.
Because this diet consists mostly of healthy fats – typically around 75-80% of food intake – keto dieters often turn to high-fat animal products like meat, butter, and whole dairy products.
However, those who want to cut off meat and follow a plant-based diet, including vegans, can opt for a ketogenic diet as well.
Vegans only consume plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains and avoid animal-based foods like meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
With a vegan diet, you can also get into ketosis by using high-fat, plant-based products such as coconut oil, avocados, seeds and nuts.
